The Philippines recently received 300 WMD protection outfits from Canada and expects to receive more defense equipment in the near future, the Ottawa Citizen reported today (see GSN, May 11, 2006).
Under a deal signed by the nations, Canadian advisers are also expected to train Philippine military personnel in using the equipment to respond to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear attacks.
Muslim insurgents and other domestic threats make up the country's primary security concerns, according to defense experts.
Canada supplied the Philippines with WMD response equipment once last year, the Citizen said. In March 2007, The Canadian Embassy in the Philippines said Canada had donated radiation sensors and protection suits to the country (David Pugliese, Ottawa Citizen, Aug. 19).
